Though it makes no mention of Luhmann, here (“Neurorhetorics: Cybernetics, Psychotropics, and the Materiality of Persuasion“) is your humble instructor’s own early attempt to follow some of the same genealogy (the emergence of second-order cybernetics in mid-twentieth century, here mixed in with coeval work on psychedelics) and the same “problem” (second-order observation or self-reference) that in many ways shape Luhmann’s own interventions into systems theory.
